Introduction

As of June 30, 2020, part of the learner experience of Docebo Learn meets the requirements to be compliant with the WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) 2.1, the U.S. Section 508 Standards of the Federal Rehabilitation Act in terms of accessibility and the European EN 301 549 V3.1.1 (Accessibility Requirements for ICT products and services), opening the e-learning experience to everybody.

Docebo has begun a journey aimed at providing all of your users with equal opportunities, making all of them able to access public and online information, removing any form of discrimination.

Beyond satisfying legal requirements, an accessible platform makes the learning experience available to a wider, more inclusive audience, broadening your horizon to new learning opportunities and content.

Docebo’s journey towards accessibility can be considered a work in progress, as more and more areas of the learner experience meet the platform accessibility standards. 

This article collects the history of the accessibility improvements done so far, sorted chronologically.

History of the accessibility enhancements 

When an area becomes accessible, the learner user interface does not go through radical changes, and, for sure, you are able to use it as usual without retraining. We work hard to make this big change as smooth as possible for users, while a lot is being reworked under the hood. Here follows the history of the accessibility enhancements deployed so far, ordered chronologically:

July 1, 2024

The channel search landmarks now have a meaningful accessible name. This update improves the accessibility for all single-channel pages, the All channels built-in page and the Channels widget.

May 20, 2024

Hindi is included in the list of all the languages that the platform offers in the Localization Tool, and learners can set it as the language of their platform from the My Profile area.

April 29, 2024

Starting from this release, the visually grouped controls of the filters panel now have an accessible name. This includes radio groups, checkbox groups, input search, input slider and button text.

March 11, 2024

This release includes accessibility enhancements for the carousels of channel and catalog pages:

  • The link is now properly assigned to the channel title at the semantics level.
  • Navigation arrow buttons are now hidden from screen readers to allow users to navigate the carousel content freely.

February 26, 2024

This release includes accessibility enhancements for the login page, vertical tabs as well as improvements to the accessibility of the privacy policy and terms and conditions pages:

  • If you have configured the sign-in page to display only the single sign-on button, the aria-label of this button is now “{ssoName}” instead of “Sign in with {ssoName}”, to avoid repetitions for those navigating with a screen reader.
  • If the Privacy policy and Terms and conditions are enabled on the platform, when users access the respective pages using assistive technologies from either the registration page or from the My profile area, the page titles now describe the page purpose, providing meaningful information.
  • When navigating vertical tabs:
    • long labels are no longer truncated, and are displayed on multiple lines instead,
    • every tablist now has an accessible name (they are named after their visible names) together with the aria-orientation attribute,
    • the section role within the tablist changed from region to group,
    • for those navigating via keyboard, the visible focus is now on the tab panel.

February 5, 2024

This release includes accessibility enhancements concerning the cookie policy banner and the learner menu readability:

  • The title of the cookie policy banner is now presented as a heading 2 element, enhancing compatibility with screen readers and improving keyboard navigation.
  • Learners will experience improved readability when zooming the page viewport and resizing text, as the learner menu labels are now wrapped and fully visible.

January 29, 2024

For those using the new course page, this release includes accessibility enhancements concerning the course page title and the skip to main content functionality:

  • The page title of the course player page now includes the lesson name beside the course name to provide better context thus helping the enrolled learners using assistive technologies, such as screen readers, better understand the page content and purpose.
  • When using the skip to main content functionality on the course player page, learners can now also navigate directly to the player area.

January 15, 2024

This release includes accessibility enhancements concerning page titles, widget titles (for widget pages) and links of the user's main menu:

  • The titles of the widgets composing the widgets pages are now identified as H2 headings to allow screen readers to properly announce their titles. The titles are recognized as Role Header, Level 2. For custom content box widgets, their titles div no longer includes the img attribute.
  • When learners open the main menu and scroll their mouse over the menu entries or navigate them with keyboard navigation, the aria-current attribute now provides better context with the link's proper textual name, role, and state information.

January 8, 2024

Swahili is included in the list of all the languages that the platform offers in the Localization Tool, and learners can set it as the language of their platform from the My Profile area.

December 20, 2023

When changing the platform language in the My profile page, Preferences tab, the Save changes with platform reload pop-up that opens to confirm your choice has been improved with an accessible name and a hint for the X button (close).

December 4, 2023

We updated the Docebo accessibility conformance reports after releasing some improvements:

In addition, we have fixed the heading structure of the All Results page of the global search.

Accessibility conformance report improvements details

The Docebo accessibility conformance reports are easier to read. Every issue is reported with a general introduction and more details about the effectiveness of issues present in the platform. This makes it easy to understand the severity of the issues for expert people. As we move forward with the accessibility remediation plan, we will improve the ACR VPAT compliance situation.

Generally, Docebo Learn allows the content to be paused and restarted from where it was paused and it doesn’t provide bink content.

Issues are limited to the widgets with infinite scroll function.

Docebo Learn does not use the down-event of the pointer for functionality that can be operated using a single pointer.

Generally, Docebo Learn properly uses the markup language and consistently checks the errors that can interfere with screen readers and assistive technologies such as duplicate IDs.

WCAG 2.2 has deprecated this criterion. For this reason, this criterion has been promoted as Supported.
2.4.6 Headings and Labels (Level AA) Core and Official

Generally, Docebo Learn presents headings and labels in a meaningful order and in a way that describes the topic or the purpose of the content.

The user interface and controls have large target areas that do not create problems for individuals who lack fine motor skills control or those who have limited reach and strength.

November 2023

On November 22, 2023, we improved the accessibility of the My profile area as follows:

  • Visually grouped controls are now grouped programmatically (the My skills tab is excluded).
  • Disabled personal details are now read-only and have a good color contrast.
  • The table in the Content partner affiliation tab is now accessible

In addition, a handful of minor issues have been addressed in the following areas:

September 2023

On September 11, 2023, we updated the details of the Platform Tests Against the WCAG Guidelines chapter of our Accessibility Statement (opens in a new tab) and made available additional resources on accessible writing and configuring accessible interfaces.

March 2023

Starting on March 27, 2023, Superadmins can preview and test the new course player and the revamped course and learning plan page. This revamp aims at increasing the level of compliance of Docebo Learn with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.1) (opens in a new tab), in particular for the course player and the courses and learning plans page in catalogs (for not enrolled users) and in the My Courses and Learning Plans area (for enrolled users). The Docebo Accessibility Statement (opens in a new tab) is made publicly available.

August 2022

On August 24, 2022, the Skip to Main Content was made available throughout the learner experience, so that the users of assistive technology can quickly reach the main content of the page, bypassing other elements such as the logo, search areas, and the header buttons.

December 2021

On December 21, 2021, the Results page of the global search became accessible, allowing all users to browse the results of their searches also using screen readers, keyboard navigation, and zooming the area up to 400%.

August 2021

On August 24, 2021, the accessibility standard was reached in the area displaying the plan content at the bottom of the Subscription Plans built-in page when selecting the What’s Included button, both for logged-in users and in the public area.

May 2021

On May 25, 2021, the My Profile area met the platform accessibility standards.

February 2021

On February 9, 2021, the compliance on accessibility was reached in new areas of your desktop platform including built-in pages and widget pages:
