Introduction
The navigation policy of a course allows you to establish the order in which learners will have to complete the training material composing it.
You can sequence the training materials and lock them to force learners to complete them according to the order you have configured.
Configuring the navigation policy
In order to set the navigation policy of a course, access the Admin menu from the gear icon in the top right corner of the page, then press the Course management subitem in the E-learning section. Once you are on the Course management page, find the course in the list for which you would like to manage the navigation policy.
Click on the course description and, once in the course area, move to the Properties tab, then to the Navigation vertical tab.
Navigation policy
In the Navigation policy section, select which policy you want to apply to your course, among the available options.
- Free navigation. All training material is unlocked, and learners can play it in their preferred order.
- Sequential navigation. Learners have to complete and pass the training material according to the order that you have established in the Training material page for the course. Learners must complete and pass an item to unlock the next one in the course.
- Completion of the first mandatory training material. Learners can access the training materials of the course only after they have completed and passed the first training material in the list. They will then be able to view the other training material in their preferred order.
- Final training material locked. The course will be marked as completed when a learner passes the last training material of the course. If you choose this navigation policy, the last material will be locked, while the others will be unlocked and free to access in the preferred order of the learner. The final training material will remain locked until all previous materials have been completed and passed. Please note that while the option is intended to be used with a test training material, any final material will be considered the "test" and therefore locked.

Maximum number of attempts
Enable the Set the maximum number of attempts option to define how many times a learner can attempt to pass the training materials with a score.
The specified number of attempts applies individually to each training material within the course. Therefore, avoid configuring this setting at the course level if you have multiple scorable training materials and want to assign different attempt limits to each one.
Once the maximum number of attempts is reached, the learner will be locked out of any training material they did not pass. The material will be marked as Not passed, and the overall course status will remain In progress.
You can reset the training material status and allow learners to retake it from the course report. Resetting a user’s progress is also required when changing the number of attempts from any set value to zero (which grants unlimited attempts).
Best practice. If the course includes test training materials, either set a value for the maximum number of attempts at the course level or configure the Maximum number of attempts to pass the test option in the test settings. If both options are configured, the platform will apply the one with the lower value.

Accessibility hint: When configuring the number of views for training materials or the number of attempts for courses, keep in mind that some users may not be able to successfully complete a task on their first attempt. Reviewing content can be crucial for the effectiveness of the learning process. If such limitations are required, be aware that the effectiveness of the training might be affected based on the learner's abilities and usage conditions.
