Introduction
In your platform, testing is a very important tool that allows you to manage various configurations to better fit your training needs. Once you’ve set up your questions and answers, you will need to set up your test options.
Begin by accessing the Admin menu, then pressing the Course management subitem in the E-learning section. On the Course management page, find the course in the list, click on its description and move to the Training material tab.
In the list of training material on the Training Material page, find the test that you want to configure, then press the menu icon in the test’s row and select Edit from the dropdown menu. Now, you will be redirected to the Edit page. In the action bar at the top, press the Test options item.
On the Test Options page, you will see three tabs on the left side: Set question display, Set attempt options, and Set feedback options. Refer to the following sections to learn more about the options in each tab.
You cannot change test options if there are users who have started the test and not yet completed it as this would result in tracking data corruption and users not being able to complete the test. In this scenario, test options are locked. In order to unlock them, reset the tracking data for all of the users who have started the test and have not yet completed it as described in the Tips and tricks section of this article. Please note that unenrolling users from a course does not delete their tracking data.
Set question display
This tab is divided into three sections: Page view, Question, and Answers view. Refer to the following table to learn more about each option.
Please note. If the test has been started by any user enrolled in the course (status of In Progress), or if the Superadmin manually set the test status to Not Yet Started for a user, the options available in the Set Question Display tab are disabled, except for the Answer View section, in order to grant that all of the users are taking the test with the same parameters. If you need to edit the options of the test but they are locked, you need to reset the tracking data of the users already involved in the test by following the instructions described in the Tips and Tricks section of this article.
Option section | Option name | Option notes |
---|---|---|
Page view | Show questions grouped in one or more pages (clustered by break pages) | The break pages are added and sequenced by you when adding questions to your test. Refer to the Creating tests and managing test questions article in Docebo’s knowledge base for more information on adding break pages to your test. |
Page view | Show one question per page | If you add any break pages or titles to your test and you select this option, they will be ignored. |
Questions | Show all questions arranged in sequence set on test's Edit page | This sequence is determined by you. Using the cross icon in each question’s row in the list of questions on the test’s Edit page, drag and drop each question in a specific order. |
Questions | Show all questions in random order (set sequence ignored) |
All questions on the same page of a test will be randomized. If you add any titles to your test and you select this option, they will be ignored. Warning: When choosing this option, do not insert a page break after the title or the test will display a blank page that learners cannot navigate past. |
Questions | Show x questions out of x available. LMS selects questions at random and they change for each attempt. | If you select this option, not all of the questions will be displayed in the test for the user, depending on what you type into the text box. For example, if you’ve created 11 available questions, but you type the number 6 into the text box, 6 of the 11 available questions will be randomly selected and presented to the user. The selection changes per attempt and per user. If you added any break pages or titles to your test and you select this option, they will be ignored.
Please note. If you select this option, you cannot have the questions on more than one page. All questions must be on the same page, and break pages will be ignored. For the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th options, the title will be ignored. |
Questions | Show a certain number of questions from each category LMS selects questions at random and they change for each attempt | Questions will be randomly selected based on the categories they are assigned to. Once this option is selected, type a number into the text box to indicate how many questions you would like your users to answer. For example, if you’ve created 14 available questions, but you type the number 7 into the text box, 7 of the 14 available questions will be randomly selected and presented to the user.
Answer view | Show all answers arranged in sequence set on question's Edit page | The answers for each question will appear as you’ve arranged them when you created the question. |
Answer view | Show all answers in random order if allowed by question type. LMS randomizes answers upon each attempt | The answers for each question will automatically have a random order if that specific question type allows randomization of answers. If you select this option, the option to Shuffle Answers when creating each individual question will be greyed out; so you cannot select the option to shuffle answers for an individual question. |
Set attempt options
This tab displays all options in one section: Test options. Refer to the following table to learn more about each option.
Please note. An attempt for a test is counted when a user submits the test, not when a user enters the test. This also means that if you've set a time limit for each test attempt, the time limit will begin from the start at every attempt before a user has submitted the test.
Option section | Option name | Option notes |
---|---|---|
Test options | Force users to answer all questions |
Users cannot submit the test unless they have answered all questions. Users can still leave the test and return to take it later, but no answers will be saved.
|
Test options | Hide test details on the course player page | All of the details such as time limit, number of questions, pass mark, number of attempts, etc. Users will only see the test title and description. |
Test options | Allow users to change answers if they resume a test that they save and access later | If users save a test and resume the test later, they cannot change the answers that they previously saved unless this option is selected. Note that this option only works if you also enable the Allow users to save the test and resume it in another session option |
Test options | Allow users to switch between pages of the test (enable the Previous Page button) | |
Test options | Allow users to save the test and resume it in another session (answers saved between sessions) | You cannot enable the Allow users to change answers if they resume a test that they save and access later option unless this option is also enabled |
Test options | Maximum number of attempts to pass the test (set 0 for unlimited attempts) |
Use the text box to designate a maximum number of attempts to answer to test. You can insert “0” into the text box to set no limit. If you set a limit, you will then see the Maximum attempts reached section appear below. When learners reach the maximum number of attempts, the test is locked and they will no longer be able to access it. |
Maximum attempts reached | Enable waiting period between attempts | When this option is selected, the test is suspended for a certain number of hours after users fail it the maximum number of times. Type the number of hours into the corresponding text box. |
Maximum attempts reached | After the waiting period, require user to re-complete all of the test prerequisites | If you select this option, all training materials that are prerequisites to complete before the test will no longer be marked as Complete. Before the user can take the test again, he or she will have to complete all of the prerequisite training materials again. |
Set feedback options
This page is divided into three sections: Score display, Show submitted answers, and Show correct answers. Refer to the following table to learn more about each option.
Option section | Option name | Option notes |
---|---|---|
Score display | Show final score, if possible (i.e. there are no questions that require evaluation by an instructor) | The final score can be shown to the user if all of the questions have been evaluated. If the user has completed all of the questions, but some of them still need to be evaluated by the Instructor, no score will be shown. |
Score display | Show average score, based on test results of other users that have already completed the test | |
Score display | Show score grouped by question category, if possible (i.e. there are no questions that require evaluation by an instructor) | The final score can be shown to the user if all of the questions have been evaluated. Scores will be divided by question category. If the user has completed all of the questions, but some of them still need to be evaluated by the Instructor, no score will be shown. |
Show submitted answers | Yes | If the Show Submitted Answers setting is set to Yes, all of the answers submitted by the user (both correct and incorrect answers) will be shown. |
Show submitted answers | No | |
Show submitted answers | Yes, if the test has been passed | If the Show Submitted Answers setting is set to Yes, if the test has been passed, all of the answers submitted by the user (both correct and incorrect answers) will be shown ONLY IF the test has been passed by the user. |
Show correct answers | Yes | If the Show Correct Answers setting is set to Yes, the correct answers submitted by the user (but not the incorrect answers) will be shown. |
Show correct answers | No | |
Show correct answers | Yes, if the test has been passed | If the Show Correct Answers setting is set to Yes, if the test has been passed, the correct answers submitted by the user (but not the incorrect answers) will be shown ONLY IF the test has been passed by the user. |
Show correct answers | Yes, starting from a specific date | If the Show Correct Answers setting is set to Yes, starting from a specific date, the correct answers submitted by the user (but not the incorrect answers) will be shown after the specific date you set in the corresponding field. |
Best practices
It is recommended that you do NOT unenroll a user from a course in which he or she has a status of In Progress for a test training material. If the user must be removed while still In Progress for a test training material, you must first reset the user’s tracking data for the test (manually set it back to Not Yet Started) before the test options will be enabled for configuration again. You can perform this action from the course report area.
Tips and tricks
If you need to reset the tracking data of the users involved in a test, go through the following steps, for every user needing the reset:
- Access Course management area from the Admin menu
- Select the course associated with the test in the list of courses and move to the Reports tab
- In the User statistics section, click on the username to be redirected to the user’s summary report and move to the Progress section
- Look for the test training material and click on the play button in the Status column. Set the test status to In progress (if not already set)
- Refresh the page
- Once the test status is set to In progress, you can reset its tracking data (for the selected user) by clicking on the X in the Reset column
