Introduction
When setting up a test in your platform, managing time limits effectively is key to ensuring a smooth and fair experience for all learners. Depending on your assessment goals, you can configure different time settings to suit your needs.
Configuring time options for tests
To configure time options for a test, log into your platform and access the Admin menu by clicking the gear icon in the top-right corner of the page. Under the E-learning section, select Course management and locate the course containing the test you want to configure.
Click on the course description to open its settings, then go to the Training material tab, find the test in the list of training materials, click the menu icon at the end of its row, and select Edit. Once in the test editor, click on the Time management button in the action bar at the top.
As an instructor, access to the management of the course training material as described in the instructor user guide.
In the Manage time limits area, select one of the following options.
No time limit
Use this option to give learners unlimited time to complete the test.
Accessibility hint: Removing time limits ensures inclusivity by accommodating individual needs, complying with accessibility standards, and promoting equal opportunities. Many users who have disabilities need more time to complete tasks than other users: they might take longer to respond or read, and they might be accessing content through an assistive technology that requires more time.
Enforce overall time limit for test
Enable this option to set a total time limit for completing the test. This ensures that learners must finish all test questions within the specified duration, creating a structured and time-sensitive assessment environment.
Set the test total allowed time in the New total time field, in seconds.
Enforce time limit for individual questions
Enable this option to apply specific time constraints for answering questions within the test. Set a total time for the test, which can then be distributed across the questions either equally, based on difficulty, or by assigning a custom time limit to each question.
First, set a total time to complete the test (in seconds) in the New total time field.
Then select how you wish to divide the time, according to the following options:
- Score based on question's level of difficulty. The platform splits the total time allowed to complete the test among questions according to their difficulty level, and you cannot edit the attributed value. The question difficulty is set at question creation time, but you can modify it at the question level using the dropdown in the Set level of difficulty column.
- Same time for each question (total time/number of questions): The platform equally splits the total time allowed to complete the test among questions, and you cannot edit the attributed value.
- Choose a time limit for answering each question: Assign a custom time limit for each question. The total time allowed to complete the test is then automatically calculated as the sum of the time allowed for each question.
Best practice: Ensure that no question has a time limit of 0 seconds, as this would prevent learners from completing the test.
