Introduction
Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) is a widely accepted standard for integrating external learning tools with Learning Management Systems (LMS). You can import LTI content as training material in courses and the Training materials page.
Docebo supports LTI 1.3, LTI 1.1, and LTI 1.0 content:
- LTI 1.3 Content (opens in a new tab). In addition to the capabilities of LTI 1.1 content, LTI 1.3 offers enhanced security standards based on OAuth2 and JSON Web Tokens. It is highly recommended to implement and procure products that conform to the latest version of LTI 1.3. LTI 1.3 content can be uploaded in the Training materials page. Currently, Docebo supports only basic LTI 1.3 content; advanced capabilities such as LTI Deep Linking are not supported.
- LTI 1.1 Content (opens in a new tab). This content does support feedback to the platform, meaning that the training material in Docebo will be marked as complete when the user completes a certain percentage of the content. All tests that are LTI content must be 1.1.
- LTI 1.0 Content (opens in a new tab). This content does not support any type of feedback to the platform, meaning that when a Docebo user opens this content, the training material is automatically marked as complete.
This article outlines how to upload and manage LTI content on the Docebo platform.
Requirements and limitations
- The LTI version and the tracking system of the content coming from third-party systems (such as Skilla) are determined by the provider and cannot be configured in Docebo.
- Auto-tagging is not supported for LTI content.
- You can upload LTI content directly to e-learning courses only. To use LTI content in an ILT course, first add it to the Training materials library, then import it from the Training materials tab of the course.
Uploading LTI content to e-learning courses
Create an e-learning course or access an existing one from the Courses page (Navigation menu, Content and delivery section). Go to the Training material tab and follow these steps:
- Click Add training material
- Select LTI
- Enter a title and a description
- Enter the launch URL following the HTTPS protocol
- Enter the Consumer key and the Shared secret if required by the content provider
Configure the content options as described in the following paragraphs.
In the LTI tab, add a title and description into the corresponding text boxes, then insert the Launch URL in the following text box. The Launch URL format must have HTTPS protocol.
Privacy
Share the launcher’s name, e-mail, or both with the tool to track users’ progress.
Completion
Set the completion conditions:
- LTI 1.0. You must select the option to mark the content as complete as complete as soon as it is opened.
-
LTI 1.1 and LTI 1.3. You can choose to mark the training material as complete either as soon as it is opened, or after a score from the external tool is received. For score-based completion, set a minimum passing score.
- For LTI 1.1, the completion score must be an integer between 0 and 100. Since LTI 1.1 standard scores range from 0 to 1, the platform automatically multiplies the score received from the external tool by 100 to calculate the completion percentage.
- For LTI 1.3, the standard allows any score value greater than zero to be sent, and the platform does not perform any recalculation.
The training material is marked as complete when the learner reaches the configured score. If a minimum score is not required, select No score reporting (only mark as complete when the above score is reached).
View mode
Set the view mode for the training material in the course player: inline, theater mode, stand-alone mode or new window.
Additional info
Select or upload a thumbnail.
Enter a short description.
Add tags to improve the training material’s searchability in the platform global search. You can edit or remove tags at any time, with a limit of 15 tags per training material and of 32 characters per tag.
Click Save changes to add the content to the Training material tab.
Uploading LTI content in ILT courses
LTI training material can only be added to an ILT course from the Training materials library as explained in the following chapter. You cannot add it directly to the course.
Once you have uploaded an LTI content to the Training materials page, follow these steps:
- Open the course.
- Go to the Training material tab
- Click Add training material
- Select Import training material from library
- Use the filters to display LTI content
- Select one or more contents
- Click Confirm
Uploading LTI content in the Training materials page
To add LTI training material to the Training materials page, follow the instructions provided in the Adding training material chapter of the article on the Training materials page.
After selecting LTI as training material type, select the version of the LTI content you wish to upload, either 1.1 or 1.3.
If you upload LTI 1.1 content, continue the upload process by following the instructions provided in the Uploading LTI content in courses chapter of this article.
If you upload LTI 1.3 content, set the training material title and, optionally, its code and description. Click Next.
Go to the Training materials page and follow these steps:
- Select a folder from the left panel.
- Click New in the top right corner.
- Select LTI in the list to open the right panel
Configuration section: choose the LTI version
LTI 1.1: Follow the same steps outlined to add an LTI content to an e-learning course.
LTI 1.3: Set a title and, optionally a code, and description and click Next.
Version information section
Enter the LTI version 1.3 details following your LTI tool. All fields are required. Write URLs in lowercase and use the HTTPS protocol. For more information, refer to the official LTI documentation (opens in a new tab).
Click Select to go to the configuration area of the LTI content and follow these steps:
Properties tab
Details section
Refer to the Additional information section of the chapter Uploading LTI content in e-learning courses.
Settings section
Refer to the Completion section of the chapter Uploading LTI content in e-learning courses.
View mode
Refer to the View mode section of the chapter Uploading LTI content in e-learning courses..
Content tab
Use the Content tab to configure and manage the parameters needed to interface the Docebo platform with the tool and vice versa:
- The parameters listed in the Platform fields tab are generated by Docebo to configure the LTI tool and are in read-only mode.
- Use the Tool settings tab to use the parameters made available by the LTI tool to configure the integration.
- If your platform uses an Extended enterprise or a custom domain, make sure to use the Extended enterprise or custom URL when configuring the training material in the LTI tool. If you need to distribute the training material to users across multiple domains, you must create a separate training material for each domain.
Assigned courses tab
The Assigned courses tab lists the courses to which the training material is already assigned. Click on Assign to courses in the top right corner of the page to assign the training material to other courses by selecting them from the right panel and clicking on Assign.
Find out more about managing the content coming from the Training materials page in courses.
Notes for Power Users
- Power Users without View permissions for courses: cannot see the Assigned courses tab
- Power Users with only View permissions for courses can see the tab with the courses assigned to them as resources. But they cannot assign additional courses.
- Power Users with View and Edit permissions for courses can see the tab with the courses assigned to them as resources. They can also see the training material to other courses they manage.
Registering an LTI 1.1 or 1.3 resource
Superadmins or course instructors might need to register the LTI 1.1 and 1.3 training material that is added to a course before learners can play it. Access the course, select the training material , and follow the steps outlined in your interface to register it.
The registration process changes depending on the resource of the content. Once you have completed the registration process, the training material can be played by all users.
LTI content capabilities
When learners play an LTI training material, they can use the following capabilities to enable more interactive and collaborative learning experiences directly within the platform.
- Camera and microphone. Available in all view modes on both desktop and mobile devices.
- Screen sharing. Available in all view modes on desktop devices only.
These capabilities allow seamless integration with external tools.
When learners start an LTI training material in a course, a pop-up message asks them to allow or block access to their screen, microphone, and camera. The pop-up appears only if the LTI training material is configured to request access to these permissions.
Best practices
Docebo calculates the OAuth signature for LTI training material according to the IMS guidelines (opens in a new tab).
