Introduction
AI roleplay lets learners practice real-world conversations with a virtual avatar. As a Superadmin, you create and manage AI roleplays from a dedicated section of the platform, without using Creator.
This article explains how to open the AI roleplay section, find your roleplays on the dashboard, create a roleplay from a prompt or a template, configure each tab, preview and publish it. For guidance on writing effective field content, see Best practices for writing AI roleplays. For rubrics and reviewers, see Configuring evaluation, rubrics and reviewers in AI roleplay.
Requirements and limitations
- At release, only Superadmins can access the AI roleplay section.
- AI roleplay requires an active Simulation Pack. Learners cannot start a simulation if none are available to them. For details on your package, contact your Customer success manager.
- The roleplay configuration panel is available in English only, regardless of your platform language. The learner experience can be delivered in many languages. See the Languages section below.
- Publishing a roleplay does not make it available to learners. To make it available, you must assign it to a course. Learn more in Assigning AI roleplays to learners.
- Roleplays created earlier in Creator lessons continue to work in those lessons. Learn more in AI roleplay in Creator lessons after the standalone release.
Accessing the AI roleplay section
In the navigation menu, open Content and delivery and click AI roleplay. The dashboard opens and lists your roleplays.
Using the dashboard
The dashboard is a table of your roleplays. Click a roleplay title to open it for editing.
| Column | What it shows |
| Name | The roleplay title. Click it to open the roleplay. |
| Creation date | When the roleplay was created. |
| Publishing | The number of courses the roleplay is assigned to. Click it to see the courses. |
| Created by | The user who created the roleplay. |
| Updated on | When the roleplay was last changed. |
Above the table, you find the following buttons:
- Create AI roleplay: starts a new roleplay.
- Manage: opens the Simulation pools page, where you manage how simulations are allocated. Learn more in Managing simulation pools.
To find a roleplay, use the search field or filter the table by user.
Each row has the following actions: Edit roleplay, Publish and Duplicate.
Please note: The table does not yet show the number of learners who ran a roleplay or the average score.
Creating a roleplay
On the dashboard, click Create AI roleplay. Describe the conversation in the prompt field, or select one of the featured templates below it. When you select a template, it fills the prompt and you can edit it. Then click the button to generate the roleplay.
The creation flow opens, with the fields prefilled by AI based on your prompt or template. Review and adjust each tab. All tabs are accessible at any time, in any order. Test the roleplay in the preview, and then publish it.
The creation flow has five tabs: Scenario, AI persona, Evaluation, Learner view and Settings.
What AI prefills and what it does not
AI prefills the configuration fields from your prompt or template. You can review and change every field.
Please note: Some settings are not filled by AI, even if you mention them in the prompt. These defaults apply: interaction mode Video, time limit 5 minutes and number of attempts 1. Check the Settings tab before you publish.
Configuring a roleplay
Scenario tab
In the Scenario tab, describe the situation, the goal the learner must reach and the role the learner plays. Keep each description short and specific. Describe what the learner must accomplish, not what the AI persona does.
See Best practices for writing AI roleplays for Good and Poor examples.
AI persona tab
In the AI persona tab, define who the learner talks to: the name and role of the persona, a personality, and optionally a profile and additional context. For the personality, choose one of the predefined options (Agreeable, Vague or Skeptical) or define a custom personality. To choose the image that represents the persona, click Change avatar.
Please note: The avatar image is visible to learners in Video and Voice modes. In Chat mode, the conversation is text-only and no image is displayed. The avatar's appearance does not change how the conversation flows.
Evaluation tab
In the Evaluation tab, define how the AI evaluates the learner. By default, every roleplay uses a qualitative rubric based on general communication criteria. To use your own criteria, click Create custom rubric. You can create a qualitative or quantitative rubric and write the criteria yourself or generate them with AI.
For all steps, see Configuring evaluation, rubrics and reviewers in AI roleplay.
Learner view tab
In the Learner view tab, edit the onboarding page that learners see before they start the simulation. The page is prefilled when AI generates the roleplay, and you can edit all of it: the description of the conversation, who the learner is talking to and the learner's objectives. If you added languages, use the editing language selector to edit each version.
Changes take effect when you save. For what learners see, see Practicing with AI roleplay and reading your report.
Settings tab
Use the Settings tab to define the experience parameters:
- Interaction mode: how learners interact with the avatar. Video shows an animated avatar that speaks and moves on screen. Voice lets learners talk with the avatar while a static avatar image is displayed. Chat lets learners exchange written messages with the avatar.
- Number of attempts: how many times a learner can attempt the roleplay, from 1 to 10 or unlimited.
- Time limit: a time limit for the roleplay, from 5 to 20 minutes.
- Assign reviewer: select this option to have learner submissions reviewed by groups, branches, users or managers. Learn more in Configuring evaluation, rubrics and reviewers in AI roleplay.
To choose an interaction mode, see the guidance in Best practices for writing AI roleplays.
Previewing a roleplay
The roleplay page includes a preview of the onboarding page that learners see. Click Start preview to test the roleplay in the same player that learners use. Preview before every publish, and again after each significant edit. If you added languages, use the language selector in the preview to check each version. A preview does not count as a simulation.
Publishing a roleplay
Click Publish. In the Publish roleplay panel, choose the training material folder in Folder location, click Assign to courses to select the courses, and then click Confirm. Learners cannot access the roleplay until you assign it to a course. For all steps, see Assigning AI roleplays to learners.
Once the roleplay is assigned, the Publish button changes to Assigned, followed by the number of courses.
Please note: At release, a roleplay is available as soon as you publish it. There is no draft state.
Editing a roleplay
On the dashboard, click the roleplay title, or use the Edit roleplay action on the roleplay row. Change the fields in any tab and click Save changes. To rename the roleplay, click the three dots menu and select Edit name.
Duplicating a roleplay
Duplicate a roleplay to reuse its configuration, for example to create a variation for another audience or language. On the dashboard, select Duplicate on the roleplay row. A new roleplay titled Copy of followed by the original title appears in the table.
Please note: The duplicate is an independent roleplay and is not linked to the original. It does not carry over any course association of the original. To make the copy available to learners, assign it separately.
Languages
You can create and deliver roleplays in multiple languages.
- Default language: you set a default language for each roleplay in the creation flow. You write the roleplay content, rubric and Learner view in that language.
- Additional languages: the product supports 46 languages. To add languages, click Translations in the roleplay page, search for the languages in the Translate roleplay panel and click Confirm. English is the default language and is always included.
- Learner language: the learner receives the roleplay in the language of the course. If the roleplay is not available in the course language, it falls back to the roleplay default language. Learners can change the language if other languages are available.
- Report language: the evaluation report is generated in the language the learner used.
- Voice: in Video and Voice modes, the avatar speaks with a voice suited to the language.
- Configuration panel: English only.
Please note: Rubric criteria and evaluation prompts are not manually translated. Write them in the roleplay default language.
